 Title: Clinical Research Fellow

Salary: £31,127 to £41,300 plus London weighting

Job Summary

INHALE: Personal pollution exposure and effects on the lungs in healthy and asthmatic individuals This project is an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) funded project that will examine the effect of environmental pollution in West London on respiratory health in healthy individuals and in those suffering from asthma. The responses will be analysed at an individual level using the most up-to-date techniques available. Ultimately, all the data will be used to develop models of the impact of pollution on personal health in both outdoor and indoor urban environments by integrating across biological length scales.  

Duties and responsibilities

The research will be supervised by Professor Fan Chung  at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College, in collaboration with Professor Chris Pain of Earth Sciences, Imperial College. It will be based at the National Heart & Lung Institute, Imperial College. The clinical activities will be based at the Royal Brompton Hospital Clinical Studies Unit.

This is an exciting opportunity for a clinician whose responsibility will be to (i) recruit healthy and asthmatic individuals for a period of close monitoring of their personal exposure to pollution and of their personal respiratory response to the pollutants and (ii) to obtain biologic samples from these participants for extensive analysis.

In collaboration with a Research Nurse and other Research Fellows in the INHALE project, you will have overall responsibility for the success of the clinical aspects of this study. You will be given the opportunity to work on other aspects of the study including bench work on the biology of epithelial cells or on microscopic analysis of particulates in cells.

Essential requirements

We are seeking to employ a full-time physician registered with the General Medical council with a postgraduate level qualification. The person should preferentially be undergoing specialty training in Respiratory or Cardiac medicine, but other specialities are most welcome particularly those in General Medicine. 

You should demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills, analytical and problem solving ability.  Knowledge of data management and statistical analysis would be an advantage but such training can be provided.

The person will be encouraged to register for a higher degree as the large amount of data collected in this study  will be highly suited for use towards submission for a PhD/MD degree.  

Further Information

The post will be suitable for physicians who wish to gain experience in management of clinical studies. There will be no clinical duties and no on-call, but you will be encouraged to participate in clinical activities such as particpatiung in clinics in order to maintain your skills.  An honorary position will be obtained at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust.

Starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience. The salary range is £31,127 to £41,300 plus £2,162 London weighting per annum.
